Arrests and Charges Announced
Good evening. I’m Allie Corey, and I’m Mark Wilson. We have breaking news tonight about a significant federal operation targeting a violent gang in Hillsborough County. The U.S. attorney announced the arrests of six suspected gang members during a news conference this morning. Our correspondent, Aaron Mesmer, reports live from Tampa.
Description of the Gang’s Activities
These gang members, described as ruthless, terrorized communities not just in Hillsborough County, Florida, but across the country. Dashboard camera footage reveals a police chase in October, culminating in the arrest of a Tampa suspect accused of carjacking, kidnapping, tying up, and torturing a man. Initially appearing as isolated incidents, federal investigators confirmed these actions were part of a broader investigation into the Alexander Park (AP) gang based in Tampa.
Indictment and Federal Charges
U.S. attorney Roger Hamburg shared details of a near 40-page indictment against six suspected AP gang members: Christian Rivera (suspected leader), Irving Bruzzone, Mohammad Jaber, Julissa Collazo, Kyle Miller, and a man referred to as Gardner from the Detroit case. The indictment describes the AP gang as a sophisticated, well-financed, and ruthless enterprise responsible for violent crimes across the United States from 2020 to 2023.
Violent Incidents and Evidence
The investigation gained momentum following a series of violent incidents, including an April 2022 shooting at a strip club parking lot that led to a retaliatory shooting at a Tampa strip mall. Detectives recovered approximately 70 shell casings at the latter scene, which helped connect the gang to multiple other crimes, including drug trafficking and fraud.
Conclusion and Future Implications
Federal authorities believe the dismantling of the AP gang will significantly reduce crime and enhance community safety. If convicted, the six arrested individuals could face life sentences in federal prison. The operation marks a substantial victory in the fight against organized crime, providing long-term security for affected communities.
