Weekend Violence in Chicago
Chicago experienced another violent weekend, with more than 40 people shot and 8 fatally injured between Friday evening and Sunday night.
Early Morning Shooting Incident
The violence continued into the workweek with the deadly shooting of a security guard early Monday morning.
Victim Identified
The security guard has been identified as Damian Nelson, a highly regarded employee by his supervisors and residents at the Courtright Apartments on the Near West Side.
Details of the Shooting
The shooting occurred just after 4 AM at the intersection of 14th and Morgan. Nelson was killed by gunshots fired from a passing dark sedan. Detectives found dozens of shell casings scattered across the pavement.
Employer’s Statement
Nelson’s employer condemned the act of violence, stating that it was not just an attack on an individual, but on the safety and well-being of the entire community. They issued a written statement expressing strong condemnation of the act.
Other Incidents Over the Weekend
- Two men were shot in Little Village around 8:30 PM Sunday night. One victim, shot multiple times in the torso, was pronounced dead. A 35-year-old victim was listed in critical condition.
- A 14-year-old boy was among the teenagers shot across the city over the weekend.
- A shooting occurred at 118th Street and South Michigan Avenue in West Pullman, where a 55-year-old woman standing nearby was also wounded.
Community Response
Residents and officials expressed sorrow and concern over the escalating violence as summer approaches. Benford Security, Nelson’s employer, is providing grief counselors to the staff to cope with the tragedy.
