Man Dies After He Opens Fire at Family Reunion in a Park

A man died after he opened fire on a guest at a family reunion. After getting into an argument with two women at a family reunion, a man opened fire on Saturday night at a park attended by at least 50 people.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the incident occurred in the Chicago suburb of South Holland, Illinois, at Maicach Park. The unidentified assailant allegedly got into an altercation with his current girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend at the park, which hosted about 50 people.

Initially, the man left the park, but returned later to finish the argument with his ex-girlfriend. At some point during the altercation, the man began shooting at someone.

Andriana Foster, who was at the park when the shooting started, told the Sun-Times that the man fired at least 10 “rapid fire” shots.

“By the time I heard [the gunshots], I was near the field, and I started running,” she explained. “I was running toward my kids to try to get them to safety.”

An off-duty officer, who attended the reunion, was able to shoot the assailant and take him down. The man was the only one at the reunion who obtained an injury. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately died.

The off-duty officer has also not been identified.  NBC Chicago reported that he works for the Palos Hills Police Department, situated in another Chicago suburb about 17 miles northwest of South Holland.

The incident is still under investigation. Those with information regarding the case are asked to contact the South Holland Police detectives at 708-331-3131, ext. 2.
