This morning Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) vet comedian J Anthony Brown walked out of the LA recording studio where he does the show and stated “I’m Quitting.” Brown is still under contract with Reach Media (Tom Joyner and Radio One’s company) so the company is trying to set up a meeting to resolve the issue.  The Industry Dot Biz has obtained audio of the exchange.  Here is J Anthony Brown quitting the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) . This was all done during a break off the air.

  1. I can’t say I blame J. Anthony Brown. If others have gotten more salary, and a new addition is expected to come in and make more than a tenured personality, then I would walk as well. Negotiations should be in order, or the plan was to release him anyway. Why put off the inevitable?

      • Really? Well, then, how should someone quit? And why should they quit that way? Business interactions should not always be responded to professionally. There are some instances in various encounters in life in which people should respond the way the spirit moves them. Subscribing to the accepted behavior for quitting is for people who need a job. People that give two week notices are usually people that need a job and need references for future jobs. People that have significant means quit when they want to and how they want to. It is relative. I say, you should be respectful if you can…if the situation allows you to. But, there is nothing wrong with saying, “I have had enough. I am leaving”, and leaving immediately. This whole corporate structure has made people emotionally and spiritually suppressing. Now, if you need a job, quit professionally. If God moves you to quit any way other than the accepted professional way…well, I suppose you should do what your relationship with God tells you to do. Your quitting the way you quit may be bigger than you.

          • Sounds like he made some kool-aid for the family and didn’t put any sugar in it. They suffered a big loss with J’s exit.

        • Yes, there IS a way to do everything. J. is a public figure without a regular 9 to 5 job. No one will take a chance on hiring someone who was willing to embarrass their last employer. “If you’ll embarrass them what will you do to us.” It’s not about being PC it’s about CYA.

        • Why do people always want to do something the wrong way then sanctimoniously bring God into it by saying they were LEAD to do that wrong thing. What part of that exchange would God endorse? Even if J didn’t need references for another job, there is a certain thing called decency. Please get away from this new, arrogant Christianity that acts improperly then instead of repenting of it, we arrogantly justify it.

          • Free will is what God gave us but if we dont use as others may see it is considered wrong but it isn’t. You know why it isnt wrong because it ia my free will to tell anyone and everyone to F#*^ off if choose.

          • Most companies do not let you know when they plan on letting you go so why should you give the that respect and who made you or anyone else the authority over someones life decisions? we need to stop and handle our own lives they way we preach and let others live their own lives. this has nothing at all to do with God or Christianity stop being religiously silly and such this is some of the actions and thought processes that give any religion a bad name.

          • I appreciate your comments Chriss. God is a God of decency and order. Being courteous, even at times like this, is still called for. Class, not crass, should have been the call of the hour.

        • Wasn’t done professionally. You are judged by your character and because he didn’t like his adjusted salary, that was very unprofessional. He suppose to be Tom’s friend even though this was business he was wrong. Tom and company didn’t get on the air and announce to him regarding his pay cut, he was letting this fester inside and unfortunately this is how he released it, again professional is always the way to go.

      • You control your destiny. You dont quit the PC way. If you arw treated unfairly put it where it belongs. This brother has dobe great rhings for a lot of struggling people. He has more than paid his dues. There is a way to treat people. You dont quit cute or nice…id you are displeased be the man J Anthony Brown is and say ao…like he did.

        Job in place isn’t smart at all. I believe that he had been thinking of leaving prior to abruptly leaving and pouting his way out of the building . Surely he’s smarter than that..

      • He want on air….he didn’t curse any one out…..and he damn sure dolt have to give a 2wks notice…….so tell us MS. PROFESSIONALLY JOB QUITTER…..how was he supposed to quit???? Its always a clown trying to be seen to go against the grain and try to make someone look so horrible….that man didn’t do anything out of line…he simply quit a job that was not treating him fairly.

          • For someone who has give much of himself I think we all agree that Mr. Anthony has been more than professional in his job. If his response would have been more URBAN some would still judge. His choice to quit and how should be respected.

  2. I personally listen to show because of Jay. He is so funny. I hope he returns, and if he doesn’t I am not sure the show can survive without a comedian.

  4. Sad to see him go, but apparently he wasn’t being appreciated and taken seriously. That much is evident by the laughter and not taking his words seriously. And if there are deals in play that exclude him, whether financially or otherwise then why not beat them to the punch and walk. I would rather walk than to have it out there that I was ‘let go’. Personally I find him funnier at times than Tom Joyner, I understand that Tom is the headliner of the show, but his pay should be comparable seeing as how he brings much to the show himself. Hate to see him leave.

  7. Jay made the show! I can’t stand Huggy. He’s not funny. I turn the station when his segment comes on. I’m not a big Chris Paul fan either. He’s kinda corny to me. Guess I’ll be switching to Rickey Smiley in the Morning.

  8. I think there’s ways to quit rather that leaving you friends hanging… LIVE ON AIR… They (management) must have totally disrespected J for h I m to quit the way he did… you never know what you’d do until you’re in that moment.

    • Many people in radio quit like that. You usually don’t give advance notice because they’ll terminate you immediately to avoid you potentially saying something damaging on air. On air people that quit in advance, often have another job lined up so there is no need to be spiteful, in fear they may lose their next job.

  9. Can’t stand this show but I agree huggy is horrible. Best wishes to Jay Anthony Brown he made the show and he will find other work. Wish he could replace dl Hughley.

  10. I want be listening anymore either. I listened because of “J”. I saw “J” at the Essence Festival selling his Barbecue sauce and asked him if he liked Sybil or if he just tolerated her. “J’s” comments were ” she’s a pain in the Azz”.

  13. I applaud JAB for quitting exactly the way he did. The show took away almost all of who he is as a comedian. I listen to how he tries to hold back some of his comments, just to not offend people. Yet, that’s the best part about comedy. It makes matters more relatable by bringing the funny out of them. I lost it for the show when they took away his characters. Reverend Brother Deacon Doctor Doug and the Italian with the tight tight pants! Just those two were enough for me to listen in hopes that they would make an appearance from time to time. Take good God care of yourself JAB! It gets greater later. GTG

  15. Are you kidding? You’re talking about Radio One. They’ve raped more employees than Bill Cosby (allegedly) With the egos on the TJMS, I’m surprised they didn’t self destruct sooner. We’ve all seen the handwriting on the wall for years. I’m sure Cantor approached Tom and suggested it was time to pull the plug, sell what you can, cash out and bail. Tom took the money and decided to stay. Jay took a pay cut because he had to. Can to r’s not stupid. He didn’t sign o n to takeover Reach Media and go straight into llitigation for breach of contract. They should have exited gracefully; instead they look like fools.

  17. Not a TJ fan at all. In the beginning, I listened because I wanted to support my peeps and the show was alright. It has rapidly gone downhill primarily because TJ has sold his soul. Real talk. One someone gets accustomed to making the $ and living the life, it don’t take much to sway them. One reason I have SO MUCH RESPECT for Dave Chappelle. He said, ‘You can get da feen-ga… The middle.

I believe he quit because there isn’t any loyal with those people, Tom has made so many bad business move, it was only right for J to move on. I am a grown man and saying that if my boss were to cut my pay in half as I have seen it be reported they should be expecting me to quit shortly thereafter regardless of whether I have something lined up or nor. Now those circumstances considered I think he went out in a very respectable manner cause had it been me after all this time it woulda been some smoke in the city….the man working the , “bleep” button would have made overtime today!!!!!

  32. Yes J makes the show. If I dont hear his voice I’m really disappointed. J makes my day. (no homo) J Anthony Brown ain’t no spring chicken. So leaving aburptly as he did meant he’s not worried about his future. Without a doubt he has the means to leave. With todays decision he gave the company as just as much respect as they gave him about his salary.

  33. i respect tom joyner for the work he does on behalf of black people in this country,and he is a great philanthropist, but he and sybil are total sellouts and say some of the stupidest shit ever on the air. hats off to J Anthony Brown for standing up for himself and doing what he felt he needed to do. i for one only listened to hear j anthony brown anyway, and i surely won’t tune in to hear those sellouts tom and sybil.

  34. I thought I was the only one who was not a fan of Huggy and Chris Paul. I love it when J murders a hit. Glad they were able to negotiate the issues. Sometimes you have to make a stand.

  37. It’s over. I will not be listening to Russ Parr on 102.3. TJMS got me going in the morning. Listened to TJMS on my morning walk at 6:00. Shame on Cathy Hughes and Radio One. They moved Tom Joyner to 1450 AM. Who can get that radio station. All you hear is static They put on Donnie Simpson in DC…why. He is stuck in the past. I don’t listen to him or Huggy. Too much Huggy Lowdown all day. Bad move Radio One. You will see. I don’t blame Jay for quitting. Hey Tom move over to Sirrius radio or another station if you can. We want you back.

  38. J Anthony Brown is one of my favorites. I thought he and Tom Joyner were tight. But, if your friend surprise you when he “drops the mic” like that then, obviously, you weren’t that close. I guess it is/was a superficial relationship as most working relationships are. Hate it.

  39. It’s amazing to read comments saying J. Anthony should have quit like a professional(slave). As though he doesn’t have talent to create his own radio show. Really folks? If a white man did it that way y’all coons wouldn’t have anything bad to say.

    I don’t look at it as him potentially embarrassing his last employer. I look at it as him having the testicular fortitude to not put with less than deserved treatment.

  42. Tom is cheap anyway he didn’t Pay Jay his first 5 years. I can see the first year so Jay can prove himself but 5 years. Shows how cheap Tom is.

  45. This man didnt quit the wrong way at all. He was not rude, nor disrespectful. What other professional way is there to quit when they are renewing a contract offering 50% less than you average salary? I am sure if you are working your jobs and you employer comes and says we’re paying you $5.40 and hr instead of your normal $12 you would be livid! He has a business, I am sure he wont be struggling but this is due to the show making changes. It just starts with J Anthony Brown in a unfair way, not to mention this potentially damages the friendship between Brown and Joyner. This sucks. And if him quitting this way causes people to say he didn’t do it right, you might want to do a bit more thinking. People have rights to choose their behaviors, when a person isnt up in arms and acting a fool, yall cant even give him credit for it! What yall expect? What, should he come back and shoot up the place??? Get a grip!

  46. That is sad. I know all to well about unfair treatment on the job. From his tone and the way he just left the show it sounded like he was probably hit with some bad news before going on air. So, his exit may have been from a prior negotiation that came back not in his favor. I hope they work it out because I listen to the show just to hear J.

  47. I can work with Huggy…. but Chris Paul is beyond weak and NEEDS. TO. GO. His jokes are NOT funny. His “raps” are painful to listen to. He should take SEVERAL seats. Sybil is the grounded one and offers a lot of insight and wisdom to the show. J Anthony is hilarious and worth every penny. He makes the show and brings it every day. That’s his gift. 🙂

  52. Were they on the air, or on a commercial break ?? I understand that Tom Joyner cut J. Anthony Brown’s pay, but gave Huggy Lowdown a pay increase, a few weeks ago. Could this be the reason why J no longer wanted to participate during Huggy’s air time ??

  55. He didn’t quit live on air. I am sure when he arrived at work, he didn’t expect to quit. I will give him the benefit of the doubt…I am sure something went wrong.
    I agree that huggys role on the show is useless and he has never been funny . I figure he must be a relative of an executive.

  56. All I can say is that, I have been there with my job and l did something about, l was looking for another job. Until they realized it was not fair. If I did not need a job, l would probably do the same. No notice or anything. Do they give you a notice when they let you go. Hell no. If you are good at what you do. Your experiences will speak for themselves. Jay have more than enough. He made the show. That other slim shaddy whatever his name is need to go find something to do, because I am tried of him.

  57. I work for an at will employer, and when I leave they’ll be given the same courtesy at which I’ve seen them give others NONE!!! Smart people have jobs before leaving, the courtesy of a two week notice is just that a courtesy. Every employer doesn’t deserve it. Cut my pay in half and see how long I stick around to talk about it ???

  58. Haven’t been able to stomach listening to the show for years now. Basically because Tom and Sybil are not funny, yet laugh at everything. J. Anthony is a comedian and I’m sure it annoys him too. Not to mention Tom has been “DJing for so long not to know more about the history of music, musicians or their fans. I have tried to listen recently and its so awful. I’m not hating, not throwing shade just saying it’s too silly for me. Syndicated radio (esp, Ricky Smiley) has ruined radio. So I stream through my phone or listen to the jazz.

  59. It appaulds me when individuals say he shouldn’t quit that way. When they are firing your behind do they give a two weeks notice.

  65. I listened to the TJMS through an entire military career; All I can say is that TOM, JAY, And SYBIL are a perfect team. When either of them are missing, even for a few days, the show just doesn’t seem the same. They compliment each other. There must be a way to fix this situation. I refuse to listen any other radio Steve, Rickey, etc. I listen to the TJMS–grown people radio!!

  66. If “Jay” felt that he needed to leave the show for business reasons, so be it. However as a listener of the show for years on a daily bases “Jay” was a great part of my listening pleasure and I’m sure many others may say the same. Therefore what about us the true listeners and supporters who also supported “Jay”? I think he should have walked away from us with a little more care and concern because many of us support “Jay”. Many of us would have never thought that “Jay” would have come into work one morning and depart from us in this fashion. I do not have any issues with him leaving his job because of business reasons, it was the way he departed from some of his true fans. Good luck “Jay” you will be missed.

  67. The show will never be the same without J. Also think about it this, they replaced him with five different comedians that shows his worth there. Loyalty Tom you have none.

  68. All they do is talk about people ! Tom Joyner wants everyone to agree with his views ? It’s really a corn-ball show, that’s why he could never get Sade or Prince to come on live or go on a cruise.

  69. J made the show! If your not comfortable leave before it gets worst. I’m missing him already. They acting like Kelly rippa, when Michael left what’s with all these different comedians. let Sybil and tom continue as they are and hope they make it without J. you don’t miss the water till the well runs dry.
    Myra and that other lady left I wonder if they left over the same circumstances. Hope the show survives.
