Massive Check Fraud Hits Colorado! (video)

In Colorado, a worrying trend has emerged where several property tax checks were stolen from blue USPS postal boxes. This issue has become increasingly concerning, as highlighted by a YouTube report.

Massive Check Fraud Hits Colorado! (video)

Jefferson County has noted that although the number of stolen checks is relatively small, the impact on victims is significant. The county processes approximately 100,000 property tax checks via mail annually, presenting a notable risk for theft.

Specific Cases Highlight the Severity

The YouTube report shared personal stories from victims of these thefts. Linda and her husband Jay, for example, used a blue postal box located right outside the post office, assuming it would be secure.

Unfortunately, three of their checks were stolen, one of which was fraudulently cashed for $22,000. Similarly, Drew Hodgson lost two checks at the same location, involving thousands of dollars.

These incidents underscore the vulnerability of using blue postal boxes for important transactions.

Response from Local Authorities and USPS

In response to these thefts, Jefferson County’s Treasurer has expressed concern, especially with another tax deadline approaching, fearing more people could become victims.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is reportedly taking measures to enhance the security of these boxes. So far, 10,000 boxes across the country have been upgraded.

Additionally, after a late-night break-in attempt, local authorities were forced to remove their own dropbox to prevent further incidents.

Recommendations for Residents

Amidst the ongoing issues, the USPS and local authorities recommend that residents use certified mail or directly take their mail inside the post office to ensure security. This advice is aimed at minimizing the risk of checks being left in compromised boxes overnight.

Future Steps and Continuing Coverage

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to address and mitigate the risks associated with mail theft.

Local news stations continue to cover these developments, emphasizing the importance of community awareness and preventive actions to protect personal and financial information.
